Observation Narrative
A heterogeneous stand of low marsh characterized by Pontederia cordata and Peltandra virginica occurs adjacent to a narrow tidal mud flat dominated by Nuphar advena on the southwestern side of this island on the Pamunkey Indian Reservation. Plot location was chosen to capture Justicia americana, which occurs as a co-dominant with Pontederia and Murdannia on the side of the plot facing the principal river channel. More nearly monospecific bands of Justicia frequently occupy narrow gravel bars along the Pamunkey River, but most of these are too small to sample or detect on remote imagery. The actual plot layout reflects necessity more than choice, as time was limited and further exploration of the island not feasible at this time. A patch of Zizaniopsis miliacea occurs in one corner of the plot. A muskrat den is adjacent to the plot and "eat-out" channels are evident within. Other signs of disturbance include empty plastic milk jugs.
